Austria to host European 18 & Under Championships

Austria to host European 18 & Under Championships

Tennis Europe is pleased to announce that the European 18 & Under Championships will be held in Oberpullendorf, Austria, from 16 to 22 September 2024.

In collaboration with the Austrian Tennis Federation, the hosts, TC Sport-Hotel-Kurz & Sport Burgenland GesmbH, will hold the event under the title 'MEHRLEBEN-18&U European Junior Championships powered by Finanzfuchsgruppe'. The venue has a wealth of experience in organizing both national and international tennis tournaments, including the long-standing 14 & Under Tennis Europe event, the Tennis Academy Burgenland Open.

The 18 & Under European Championships will be a flagship tournament for Austrian tennis, taking place in the neighbouring towns of Oberpullendorf and Lutzmannsburg. The venues (pictured below) will offer 15 outdoor tennis courts, swimming pools, fitness centres, spas, and other facilities. Alongside the main competition, the hosts are planning social events for the players and a Trainers' Symposium featuring former top 10 player Jürgen Melzer and Wolfgang Thiem, father of Dominic Thiem. A session of the Tennis Europe Junior School will complete the off-court educational program.

This will mark the fourth time that Austria has hosted the 18 & Under event, and first since 2009. Tennis Europe’s flagship junior competition, the European Junior Championships were first held in 1976 and take place annually across three age categories: 14, 16, and 18 & Under.

Former 18 & Under gold medallists include four players that later went on to become world #1: Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Carlos Moya, and Martina Hingis. Austria boats four former champions of the 18 & Under event, most recently Barbara Schwartz in 1997.

This year will see the three events played in consecutive weeks for the first time, as September offers 21 days of European Championship tennis:

14 & Under: Most (CZE), 9-15 September
16 & Under: Parma (ITA), 23-29 September
18 & Under: Oberpullendorf (AUT), 16-22 September

Further information about each event will be published on the European Junior Championships page as it becomes available.
