A perfect day for the Swiss in Klosters

A perfect day for the Swiss in Klosters

Day 3 in Klosters couldn’t have turned out better for the host nation. Four singles matches took place with Swiss players, and all four advanced to the round of 16 in straight sets.

There was some unexpected suspense for a short while during Rebeka Masarova’s match. The number 2 seed found herself 1-4 down in the second set against Russian Ekaterina Vishnevskaya before managing to reduce her unforced error count. With plenty of children in the stands, she sealed the 6-0 7-5 win and was therefore able to avoid a deciding set, which could be of utmost importance in the next days as the high temperatures are starting to take their toll. “I got briefly a bit angry at myself but am happy to have come through”, she reflected. On Thursday, she starts as a favourite again, this time against Germany’s Jule Niemeyer (ITF 197).

Mirko Martinez proved again to be an early bird by easily dispatching Piotr Matuszewski, the uninspired number 12 seed from Poland. The next opponent for the Swiss Under 18 champion is Wimbledon’s recent doubles titlist Kenneth Raisma from Estonia. Marko Osmakcic only conceded four games to Latvian Roberts Grinvalds but faces a high obstacle next; in all senses of the word: German Louis Wessels is two metres tall and fresh from registering his first ATP tour win last week in Hamburg, where he had benefited from a Wild Card. The third Swiss in the round of 16 is the smart Luca Keist, who came atop 16th seed Vital Andrei Dancu from Romania.

The Swiss could not have asked for a better day and Head Coach Yves Allegro, who leads the team together with Swen Swinnen can be more than happy: no other nation has three boys left in the draw.

It was an intense day once again with 32 singles matches taking place in total. The favourites mostly prevailed, the highest-ranked casualty was Hungarian Dalma Galfi. The number 5 seed suffered a loss at the hands of Swede Mirjam Bjorklund.
