Teichmann keeps home hopes alive in Klosters

The final weekend in Klosters promises to be very exciting. Thanks to Jil Teichmann, the host nation still has somebody to cheer for.

For Jil Teichmann, it was very important to do well in what is very likely to be her last tournament as a junior. And so far, she has fulfilled the expectations by winning four matches and showing improvement from round to round. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia 6-2 6-3 and therefore registered her clearest win of the tournament.

A bronze medal guaranteed, Teichmann has won a medal for the third consecutive year. In 2013, she had won the Under 16 silver medal in Moscow and the doubles gold alongside Chiara Grimm. Last year, in her first appearance in Klosters, she had taken the Bronze with Sarah Ottomano.

However, in order to advance to the showdown, she will have to show her absolute best as she will be facing world number 1 Marketa Vondrousova on Saturday. The 16-year-old from Czech Republic, who was born in 1999 and therefore would still be allowed to play in the younger category, hasn't been tested yet, not even in the quarterfinals versus Magdalena Frech from Poland. Vondrousova has only conceded 15 games in 4 matches.

The second semifinal will be played between Vondrousovas doubles partner Miriam Kolodziejova and Anna Bondar. The only player from Hungary who wasn't seeded has showed the best results and came atop Russian Anna Blinkova, finalist at the All England Club, in straight sets.

There will be “hot” matches among the boys with three players from southern Europe being involved. Bernabe Zapata Miralles once again showed huge fighting spirit by winning a high-quality match versus top seed French Corentin Denolly. The Spaniard will next face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas who is the only semifinalist yet to drop a set.

A final among representants of the “furia roja” is still possible as Alvaro Lopez San Martin (no 4) made short work of Romanian Nicolae Frunza and also advanced to the semis. His next opponent is number 2 seed Mikael Ymer. The Swede is adjusting better to the clay courts and altitude round by round and on Friday easily disposed of Hungarian Mate Valkusz.
