Miladinovic eliminated in Klosters

The biggest casualty on day 4 of the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters was Marko Miladinovic. The number 3 seed from Serbia - and 2015 16 & Under Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion - was eliminated in three sets by Vlad Andrei Dancu of Romania.

As in indoor play on the previous days, most seeded players showed no weakness. Corentin Moutet, the number 1, had to go to a first set tiebreaker versus Simon Sunde Bratholm but then cruised to a 6-0 win in the second set. And Hungarian Zsombor Piros, the Australian Open champion, confirmed the good impression of the previous day by disposing of Israels Jordan Hasson with a scoreline of 6-3 6-4.

Piros’ female counterpart from Melbourne, Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, beat Portuguese Lucia Quiterio 6-3 7-5. She led the charge of all the favourites, with all of the Top 8 advancing to the Round of 16. On Friday, two singles rounds are scheduled in order to make up for the delays from earlier. Organizers are hopeful to be able to finish the programme as scheduled.

The first day of clement weather allowed for 76 matches to be scheduled. Doubles competition, where sets were reduced to four games for the winner, is already at the quarterfinal stage. The biggest surprise was created by Estonians Daniil Glinka/Siim Trost who only conceded one game to the top-seeded French pair of Moutet and Constantin Bittoun Kouzmine.

In Moscow at the European 16 & Under Championships, Spain’s Gemma Lairon Navarro continued to cause upsets, following up her win over top seed Denisa Hindova with a three-set victory over #12 Helene Pellicano (MLT).

Wojciech Marek of Poland ousted fifth seeded Serb Kristijan Juhas, while #16 Adrian Andreev (BUL) brushed aside fourth seed Alexander Zgirovsky (BLR) in straight sets.

Most of the matches went according to seeding at the 14 & Under event in Most, with Julia Middendorf’s three set win over third seed Lyubov Kostenko (UKR) and Dasha Lopatetskaya’s 6-0 6-0 win over ninth seed Fatima Keita (ROU) being the stand out performances. In the boys’ draw, Petr Nesterov of Bulgaria took out fifth seeded Russian Igor Kudriashov with a come-from-behind three set win.

Tomorrow’s action should see all three events boil down to the semi-final stage. Keep up with all the latest information below...
