Monnet & Chidekh on top in Avignon

CATEGORY 1 - 16 & Under

PONT DE GENERATIONS - Villeneuve-les-Avignon, France

Local players made a strong impact in the 28th year of this leading 16 & Under tournament, with Clement Chidekh and Carol Monnet claiming the singles titles. The strong Polish contingent made its mark in the doubles categories, fielding winners in both events.

The upsets started from the very beginning with the number one seed from Lithuania Matas Bruzas being knocked out in his first match by the unseeded French boy Clement Chauvin. In the other half of the draw another French player, Clement Chidekh, a qualifier, also made his way through to draw ousting his first two opponents in three tough sets in each match. Easier quarters and semis provided some respite as he made his way through to the final where he faced another compatriot, Timo Legout.

Another unseeded player, Legout had also come through some very tough matches along the way especially in the semi-finals where he took out the fifth seed, Spanish player Max Alcala. The final was a one-sided affair however, as Chauvin took the title 6-3 6-2.

In the girls draw, things went a little bit more according to plan as the top seeded French player Carol Monnet advanced through to the semi-finals for the loss of just one game. Straight set wins followed in the quarterfinals and semi-finals, setting up a final against compatriot and tenth seed Oceane Babel. A rather easy first set for Monnet was followed by some resistance in the second set, however it wasn't enough as Monnet claimed the trophy with a 6-1 6-4 win. This was Monnet’s first tournament win for the year after having previously finished as the runner-up in two other Category 1 events - Avvenire and Joan Mir.

In the boys’ doubles, the Polish pairing of Wojciech Kasperski & Jan Wajdemajer worked their way through the draw to take the hotly-contested final against the seventh seeds from France Arthur Bord & Louis Gonnord 6-4 5-7 10-7. In the girls’ doubles the second seeded pairing of Weronika Baszak from Poland & Marketa Panackova from the Czech Republic upset the number one seeded Monnet and her Polish partner Aleksandra Julia Jelen 6-4 6-3 in the final.

CATEGORY 2 - 16 & Under

MARIN SUICA JUNIOR OPEN - Cakovec, Croatia

After a tough three-set win in the first round, qualifier Goran Zivotic from Serbia made waves, producing upset after upset on his way to the final. The biggest of all was over top seeded Slovenian Filip Jeff Planinsek in the quarterfinals. His amazing run continued as her overcame another Slovenian, number four seed Jan Kupcic in the final 6-4 6-4. In the girls’ draw top seeded Katarina Trivic of Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced to the final as expected but was halted at the final hurdle by Tara Wurth of Croatia. The local player had the joy of lifting the trophy in front of her home crowd after a 6-1 7-5 victory.

Honours in the boys’ doubles went to Russians Petr Bar Biryukov & Marat Sharipov. The winners of the girls’ doubles were Katarina Plumtree & Sara Zalukar of Croatia.
