Sweet taste of success for Moller & Petrik at Dr. Oetker Trophy

A flurry of 14 Tennis Europe Junior Tour events took place last week, from the Ukraine through to Iceland, as the summer schedule starts to heat up. Many familiar names continued to make their mark, while some interesting new players etched their names into the victory books. Here's our weekly round-up of the main action from the Tour...

14&U - DR. OETKER JUNIOR OPEN - Bucharest, Romania

Apart from a test early on in the second round by the unseeded local Andrei Corneliu Nica, top seed Elmer Moller from Denmark emerged from his matches relatively unscathed until the semi-finals. There he rose to the challenge of two tough three set matches. Derek Chen from the United Kingdom put up plenty of resistance, as the 4-6 6-4 6-4 scoreline indicates. The level of play was equally high in the final where Moller again came from a set down to undo Bulgarian seventh seed Petr Nesterov 4-6 6-3 6-4. It must be mentioned that Nesterov was in great form, having previously taken out the number four and twelve seeds as well as the in-form number two seeded player, Jack Pinnington Jones (GBR).

In a girls’ draw, there was to be some great news for the local player and number eight seed Alexandra Petric. She made her way to the final after taking care of her compatriot second seed Fatima Keita, who was unfortunately forced to retire in the semi-finals. Prior to that she had to beat a Hungarian wildcard who was strong enough to be seeded third as well as two other compatriots along the way. The number one seeded Russian Oksana Selekhmeteva was a formidable barrier in the final, but after a second set lull Petrik upset the European #1 6-4 1-6 6-1 and lifted the trophy in front of her home crowd.

More upsets in the boys’ doubles as another unseeded pairing took care of the #1 and #3 seeds in the semi-finals and finals respectively. Dali Blanch (USA) & Derrick Chen (GBR) saw off British top seeds Pinnington Jones & William Nolan and were made to work extremely hard in the final by the number three seeds from Portugal, Eduardo Morais & Pedro Graca. The final went down to the wire with some amazing tennis on display for the spectators, with the result coming down to a 10-8 victory in the championship tiebreak for Blanch and Chen.

And the upsets continued in the girls’ doubles, this time to a lesser extent, as the fourth seeded players from the Czech Republic, Anna Panchartek, and her partner from the USA, Michelle Tikhonko, took the title. Yet again a Portuguese pair (Mafalda Guedes & Matide Jorge) were the opponents in the final, with the final score being a relatively straightforward 6-2 6-3 victory. This was a well-earned win as the winners had earlier taken out the second seeds in the semi finals. Check the video below for highlights from the final day of the competition.

In the girls’ draws there again was to be a double victory for second seeded Anna Martemyanova, also from the Ukraine. She defeated Polish player and top seed Weronica Baszak 7-6(4) 7-5 in the final. Then, together, the two singles finalists teamed up to win the doubles over another pair of Ukrainians, Kristina Belalova & Iryna Lysykh, 6-4 6-2.

TORNEO UNDER 14 - Correggio , Italy

As the number one seed, Max Hans Rehberg of Germany won the title without losing a set, with his victory in the final coming over Antoni Fabre of France. Fabre’s compatriot, Emma Aucagne, won the girls’ singles over Italian Emma Valletta. There was to be joy, however, for the locals as both doubles events were won by Italians. The boys’ champions were Ivan La Cava & Giulio Perego and the winners of the girls’ doubles were Sofia Antonella Caldera & Alice Gubertini.

PECS JUNIOR TENNIS CUP - Pecs, Hungary

German Samofalov, the Ukrainian number one seed, is now two for three in finals for the year, having overcome local boy Peter Kalocsai in the tournament decider.
