The Catalan capital of Barcelona was the setting for the only Category 1 event of the week. Held at the prestigious Royal Polo Club of Barcelona, players came from far afield to participate in this event, now in its 14th year. The smooth clay courts of the famed club did not turn out to be too successful for the local players, none of whom managed to take home a winner’s trophy.
There was some inspiring news for locals however, as qualifier Alvaro Fernandez routed Hungarian top seed Daniel Khin in the first round 6-2 6-1. His amazing run was halted in the semi finals by eventual champion, and Khins’ countryman, fifth-seed Peter Makk. Makk went on to defeat another Spanish qualifier, Alberto Colas, in the final. A qualifier for last year’s Junior Masters, Makk can be happy with his progression, adding a second 16 & Under title of the season, and his biggest win yet on the Tennis Europe Junior Tour.
The girls’ draw went somewhat more according to script. The top two seeds, Reka Zadori of Hungary and Daria Frayman of Russia, met in the final. The script ended there, which was great news for Frayman, as she swept aside the number one seed 6-2 6-2. It caps an impressive season for the Russian, who has now won Category 1 titles in two age groups this season, having also claimed the 14 & Under Kungens Kanna and Drottningens Pris tournament in Stockholm, and is making a late push to end the year as top-ranked 14 & Under player.
In the boys’ doubles, Khin made up for his loss in the singles. He teamed up with Mateusz Skutella to defeat local players Jaime Caldes and Pedro Vives in a tough final that went down to the wire. There were only two points in it, with the match decided by a 10-8 third set super tie-break win. The girls’ final, oddly enough, was won by the same scoreline in the super tie-break, as Frayman got the double win in Barcelona, partnered by compatriot Oksana Selekhmeteva.
There was just the one Category 2 event this week, in Klosters, Switzerland. Austria’s Lukas Neumayer has seen his overall ranking rise steadily this year. This has been helped by a previous title as well as a runner’s up berth. Here, he dashed the hopes of local player Adrien Burdet in a three-set win. Burdet was also a runner-up in the doubles, teaming with Sven Moser as they lost to Yarin Aebi & Jerome Kym in an all-Swiss final.
The girls’ winner was Beata Havlickova from the Czech Republic. Her second title of the year came over Russian Maria Bondarenko, who joined Ana Grigoreva to take out Ekaterina Gladoshchuk & Anastasia Rudaya in an all-Russian final.
A Category 3 tournament was held by Tennis Europe’s partner the Mouratoglou Academy in Biot, southern France. Home players excelled in the boys’ singles, where Maxime Joris beat Ugo Fiorito in an all-French final. The girls’ event saw Dasha Lopatetskaya continue her stunning year, claiming a first 16 & Under title to add to her triumphs on the Ukrainian Winter and Summer Cups teams by beating top seeded Russian Maria Shusharina. She then teamed up with another Russian, Ekaterina Vinnik, to win the doubles. The boy’s doubles went to Danish-Cypriot pairing Alexander Chalmer & Antreas Djakouris.
