Top doubles teams fall in Klosters

Top doubles teams fall in Klosters

Despite the first rain delay of the week, the round of 16 singles matches were completed in Klosters on Thursday. Four players of the host nation played yesterday, two are still in contention.

Switzerlands biggest hopes lay on the shoulders of the number two seed Rebeka Masarova. The 16-year-old French Open titlist was never in danger against hard-hitting German Jule Niemeier and comfortably prevailed 6-3, 6-2.  Her next opponent is Swede Mirjam Bjorklund (ITF 56). Masarova is joined by the elegant lefthander Luca Keist, who came atop Ukraine’s Nikita Mashtakov in three sets. Mirko Martinez almost contributed to an even better overall performance of the Swiss but eventually lost to Estonian Kenneth Raisma after squandering three match points.

With three players, France has the biggest share of singles quarterfinalists. Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Sweden follow with two, whereas the hopes of Greece, Estonia, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Serbia rest on one player. The day will start on Centre Court with the intriguing match between top-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece and Raisma, who teamed up to win the doubles title at Wimbledon two weeks ago.

No longer on this list are traditional nations like Spain and Hungary. The latter had tough luck as Fanni Stollar had to withdraw from both the singles and doubles competition due to injury.

Except for Romanian Georgia Andreea Craciun (no 4), who only managed three games against Czech Monika Kilnarova, most medal candidates came through in singles on Thursday. However, in doubles, the two top-seeded teams suffered quarter-final losses. Marvin Möller & Louis Wessels of Germany were eliminated by Artem Dubrivnyy & Pavel Kotov. Their Russian compatriots Amina Anshba & Olesya Pervushyna lost to Italians Federica Bilardo & Tatiana Pieri.

Just two seeds were upset at the 16 & Under event in Moscow (RUS), both in the boys’ competition. Henri Squire of Germany came back from the brink of defeat to outlast #11 seed Riccardo Di Nocera of Italy 2-6 7-6(5) 7-5. Also unseeded, Spain’s Rafael Izquierdo Luque survived another marathon, edging past sixth seed Stefan Palosi of Romania 2-6 7-5 7-5.

At the 14 & Under Championships in Pilsen (CZE), the day’s biggest surprise saw unseeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti end the hopes of second-seeded Ukrainian Oleksiy Shestakov for the loss of just two games.

There was another Ukrainian upset in the girls’ competition, as Britain’s Kylie Bilchev claimed the biggest scalp of the day, ousting fifth seed Daria Snigur in three sets. Top seeds Helene Pellicano (MLT) and Daria Frayman (RUS) edged a step closer to a final showdown, each winning in straight sets.
