Rain the winner on Day 1 in Klosters

Rain the winner on Day 1 in Klosters

Rain was the big winner on Day 1 of the European 18 & Under Championships in Klosters. All singles matches had to be postponed to Tuesday, though a few doubles matches were played in the new indoor facility. The Portuguese and the Czech girls were the first winners to inaugurate the new arena.

Matches started at 9.15 am but after a mere 30 minutes, play was halted for the first time. After 2pm, players and courts were ready for some more action but shortly after they walked on court, the rain resumed.

Patience could be a main factor in Klosters over the next days as well. For Tuesday and Wednesday there isn’t a major improvement of the meteorological situation in sight. However, for Thursday a return to summer weather can be anticipated in the Swiss mountains.

There was a setback in the boys field just before the draw was held. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the newly crowned Wimbledon champion, had to withdraw because of a wrist injury.

At the 16 & Under Championships in Moscow, there were just a few of the lower seeds in action, and it was all bad news for Slovenia, as #13 Filip Planinsek lost to Luka Puijic (BIH) 7-6(2) 7-5, and #14 Jan Kupcic lost to Chris Rodesch of Luxembourg in three sets.

Fresh from reaching her first ever Pro Circuit semi-final last week in Badajoz, Malta’s former Tennis Europe Junior Masters champion Helene Pellicano advanced to the second round with a win over another Slovenian player, Maja Makoric.

The 14 & Under event in Most (CZE) had a busy schedule, but no big surprises, with all seeds receiving byes into Tuesday’s second round.
